Warner Music Canada recording artist Jim Cuddy has revealed the full track listing and album cover for his new solo album, Skyscraper Soul. The album cover, shot by photographer Sally Davies, will surely be an unexpected surprise for fans.
“Honestly, I was reluctant to wear a suit and play a character,” admits Jim Cuddy, reflecting on the photo shoot. “But Sally had a vision and convinced me to try it. She wanted me to look elegant and exhausted. For me, that fit in with the story of the record – that the city can beat you down.”
“Everyone Watched The Wedding,” the first single from Jim Cuddy’s forthcoming album, Skyscraper Soul, is now available for purchase at iTunes and all other DSPs. The track is now streaming at www.jimcuddy.com.
“I've never been much of a royalist but this song is about the royal wedding,” says Cuddy of “Everyone Watched The Wedding.” “Something about this last wedding got me. When I started reading more about it I realized that there was something about it that is very inspiring. And this was truly a gift. This song just came out. I had come in to the studio to do something completely different and within half an hour I had this song completely sketched out and that doesn't happen, usually there's more work involved.”
Skyscraper Soul is scheduled for release on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. All digital album pre-orders at iTunes will receive an instant download of “Everyone Watched The Wedding.” Fans can also pre-order the physical album (CD, deluxe CD pack and Vinyl with CD) at www.jimcuddy.com. Orders for the physical release come with a handwritten lyric manuscript and an instant download of the demo track, “Water’s Running High.”
In the winter of 2011, following extensive Blue Rodeo touring, Jim Cuddy began to write music to accompany his wife Rena’s comedic short film, “Four Sisters.” It turned out that writing music for the film put him on a creative roll that he continued. Before long he had the kind of material he felt could make up his third solo album.
Production on Skyscraper Soul was handled by Cuddy, guitarist Colin Cripps and Chris Shreenan-Dyck. Jim was joined in Blue Rodeo’s Woodshed Studio by his touring solo band, The Jim Cuddy Band (Colin Cripps, Bazil Donovan, Joel Anderson, Steve O’Connor and Anne Lindsay) and a number of Toronto’s top horn players and string players.
