"Neverlove is a divorce record, plain and simple," he says. "The old albums were made of wood; this one is made of steel. It doesn't sound like anything I've ever made before."
Buck 65 recently released the over the top official video for “Super Pretty Naughty.” “I wrote this song at a time when I really needed a break from feeling terrible,” he says. “Before writing ‘Super Pretty Naughty,’ my anxiety was high, I was extremely sad, I missed my wife, I felt unloved. I needed a reprieve from the gloom. After my wife left, I met a girl who I was hoping would give me hugs and kisses. I was a bit desperate for affection. I figured I might get lucky if I made a song she liked, so I asked her about her taste in music. She listed off all the things she likes about the music she dances to in clubs and I wrote it all down. I still have the piece of paper. She mentioned lyrics with 'la la la' parts, four-on-the-floor beats, classic house music, mentions of birthdays and getting dressed up, ‘build ups,’ as she put it, shiny synth sounds, breakdowns, ‘rainbows’ (I wasn't sure what she meant by that) and lots of hooks. It all went into the blender. Funny enough, I think of this song as the sound of me hitting rock bottom more than any of the heavier, darker songs on the album.”
The album adds to a small tradition of divorce records like Bob Dylan's “Blood on the Tracks” and Marvin Gaye's “Here My Dear.” "'Neverlove' is about the heartbreak, confusion, anger and madness I experienced after losing a love I expected to last the rest of my life," Buck says. "Making this record is how I got through a terrible time in my life. I hope I never write another one like it."
Buck 65 will support the release of “Neverlove” with a substantial Canadian Fall Tour (dates listed below).
