COMPAY SEGUNDO
GUANTANAMERA â The Essential Album
TO BE RELEASED IN CANADA JULY 16

Francisco Repilado Muñoz, also known as Compay Segundo, expressed his principles in the lyrics to his songs. This is apparent, both in his absolute conviction as a teenager, who at 14 years of age titled his first composition Yo Vengo Aquí Para Cantar (âI Come Here To Singâ), and in his veteran years, when in the song Sabroso he said, âFrankness is worth a lot and lying is worth nothingâ. 2013 is the tenth anniversary of his death, an occasion being marked by the release of "Guantanamera - The Essential Album.â Containing 20 of his best songs, including ¿Y Tú Que Has Hecho? from the Grammy award winning album Buena Vista Social Club, "Guantanamera - The Essential Albumâ will be released in Canada on July 16th.

An inspired and tireless creative force, Muñoz invented his own instrument, the armónico (a hybrid of the Spanish guitar and the Cuban tres), and reinterpreted the son musical style, introducing a style of his own known as coge el paso, which became known as the rhythm and personal stamp of Compay Segundo.

Compay Segundo was the most internationally recognized Cuban artist. He was still active when he died in 2003 at the age of 95. His worldwide success came in 1997 when he was 90 years old, and since then, he has sold over 3 million albums throughout the world.

In the pressâ¦
"â¦You can't go back to the 1930's or 1940's, but there is something Compay had on the artistic level. Of all the first generation of son players, Compay had it and he could just whip it out."
RY COODER, NEW YORK TIMES

âHis mischievous smile, his angelic air, his diamond heart, and his lion-like vigour, long ago elevated him to the realm of myth while in the full bloom of lifeâ
MINGUS B. FORMENTOR. 3 de mayo de 1998. LA VANGUARDIA

âEveryone Compay Segundo sang with came second to him. A good second, flawless in fact. Thatâs no easy thing to achieve, though it may seem otherwise. Not just anyone can do it.â PIO LEYVA, TOMAS SANTIESTEBAN. LA JIRIBILLA, 2003
âCompay Segundo was one of those rare people, like Louis Armstrong, who by their very presence change everything else around them. A person who exuded artistic authenticity, and who had a deep connection to the origins of the traditional style of Cuban music called son.â THE GUARDIAN, 2003

âCompay Segundo, venerable 90-year-old Cuban singer, perhaps the most in-demand musical artist at this time.â
