Award-winning Chris Mills delivers original 18 film featuring new Blue Rodeo music

For immediate release – Thursday, January 30, 2014

Blue Rodeo has announced that they will premiere the film “It’s In Our Nature To Fly” on various media online outlets as well as on the band’s own website, www.bluerodeo.com, on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 12pm ET. The film was produced by the award-winning director Chris Mills and stars Patrick Dorie (as Jim/Greg), Trish Robb (as The Heroine) and Poor Pelly (as The Ghost).

In the fall of 2013, Blue Rodeo had just finished recording their new album, In Our Nature, and asked longtime video collaborator to produce a unique music video to help promote the album. Rather than the usual music video showcasing just one of the album’s songs, Mills was asked to produce a video that incorporated, in whole or in part, Greg Keelor’s “Mattawa” and Jim Cuddy’s “New Morning Sun.” When the time came to deliver the video though, much to everyone’s surprise, Mills unveiled the 18 minute film “It’s In Our Nature To Fly” which included many of the new album’s songs performed by both the band and the film’s stars.

“After spending close time with the band, shooting and rehearsing all these great songs, the idea developed to try to make a video that encapsulated the feel for the ALBUM, rather than just the songs,” says Chris Mills. “I shared this with the team, and was encouraged to ‘run with it’.”

“Chris has been our visual translator and collaborator for many years,” says Greg Keelor. “We trust him. We trust that we can surrender ourselves to his artist vision and he will come up with a visual poem, a landscape that will make our music look and sound better.”

Mills continues, “Blue Rodeo and their team make it very easy to work in a relaxed and comfortable environment, to get and be inspired, and to run with creative ideas. For this project, one of our goals was to be as non-invasive and, in some ways, out of control of the shoot as possible - to give the musicians the space to forget the cameras were around to be themselves, and then build the project around the findings of a few days of shooting.”

“He has such a unique eye and style,” says Jim Cuddy. “When asked to do a video mash up of two Blue Rodeo songs he came back with an 18 minute opus. Part narrative, part abstract and all beautiful to look at; the video rewards multiple viewings. A truly wonderful piece of work.”
